Billy Brown
Head Coach; Junior, Senior, Masters Coach

Coach Billy Brown arrived on Kauai in April 2008 to be the Head Coach for Swim Kauai Aquatics and the Associate Aquatics Director at the YMCA of Kauai. Previously, Billy coached age group swimming with the Redlands Swim Team as their assistant Senior Coach. He also coached for the University of Redlands as their assistant coach for both of the swimming and water polo teams.  In his two years in Redlands, he received his Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.  Before Redlands, Coach Billy was based in Oahu, where he served as the head swimming and water polo coach for Pearl Harbor Aquatics, as well as Radford High School. Outside of the pool deck, Billy taught at Holy Family Catholic Academy as an elementary school teacher. Athletically, Coach Billy joins the Swim Kauai Aquatics staff as a former student-athlete at the NCAA Division I level.  He attended the University of Massachusetts-Amherst as a swimmer, competing in both the breaststroke and individual medley.  He qualified for the Olympic trials in both breaststroke events back in 2000. Currently, Coach Billy enjoys swimming the channels between the Islands.  He has accomplished this feat three times by going between Maui and Molokai and twice between Maui and Lanai.  His enthusiasm has helped develop him into the person he is today and easily translates into a desire to coach.

News Flash
In November 2010, Billy swam from Oahu to Kauai with Linda Kaiser and Mike Spalding from Oahu, Michelle Macy from Portland, Oregon and Randy Brown and Joel Swartz from California. They entered the rolling seas, going up and down the ocean swells, ignoring the pain of jellyfish, and supporting one another for nearly 48 hours. Their goal was to cross the long, lonely, dangerous stretch of water in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The 72-mile Kaieiewaho Channel has never been crossed by swimmer, until early this Monday morning, November 22, 2010 when the group finished in the dark on Kauai. They left the treacherous westernmost point on Oahu and headed 72 miles westward to the Emerald Island of Kauai. They began at 5:30 am on Saturday, November 20, 2010 hoping to complete the swim in 30-40 hours and finished 47 hours and 55 minutes later in a remarkable swim that will go down in the annals of marathon swimming history.

Coach Billy's Masters Class is continues to be a popular program at the YMCA of Kauai for all levels and ages of swimmers.
